Failing Civility

Our Measurement Indicators

When it comes to interacting with others, whether in society in general, during an argument, disagreement, or debate, we should always have high expectations of ourselves and others. What we say and how we say it matters, and our actions could mean the difference between civilised discussion and disagreement or anger and hatred leading to uncivilised behaviour.

To aid understanding, we want measurable change and pragmatic outcomes, not just a prescription for change. Our Failure Rating is designed to allow us to measure where, when, and how our civility falls below our rightful expectations. We hope this rating system will be a useful tool in helping to make our world a better, more peaceful, and more unified world. 

The Five FFFFFs

Reckless Failure

A significant and determinable disregard of others, including not caring for public safety.

Malicious Failure

Behaviour in word and deed that is intended to cause harm to others, including harm to reputation, intentionally embarrassing others, or upsetting others for the sake of pride, upmanship or other selfish or malicious reason.

Orchestrated Failure

Engaging in an action that is intended to produce a particular detrimental result for an individual or group, through organising an event, whether secretly or openly, in order to get an inappropriate advantage over another person or group.

Extreme Failure

Engaging in acts that are ‘off the radar’ in terms of their potential impact on an individual or group or society and which have a discernible severity, and which are commonly regarded as clearly wrong in any context or circumstance.

Catastrophic Failure

Engaging in behaviour that is so hostile, measurably hateful, and out of control to the extent that it can be universally regarded as criminal or having such social impact as to be devastating for identifiable group/s or society as a whole. Our findings and ratings shall be detailed and in our annual report, where the top 10 promotions and breaches of Global Civility shall be highlighted.
